Masculinity(ies) in radicalisation prevention – gender-sensitive approaches in working with radicalised individuals from the Islamist spectrum

Although it has become increasingly apparent in recent years that gender is a key analytical category in Islamist radicalisation processes, constructions of masculinity have so far been a largely overlooked gap in prevention work. Gender-specific dynamics in the practice of radicalisation prevention and deradicalisation have rarely been systematically reflected upon or conceptually anchored. This publication aims to help close this gap by combining theoretical insights into ideologies of masculinity with empirical knowledge gained from prevention work. The central questions here are: What role do hegemonic and toxic images of masculinity play in radicalisation and deradicalisation in the context of Islamism? And how can gender-sensitive approaches be conceptually and methodologically anchored in prevention and counselling work? As a link between research and practice, the publication is aimed at professionals, institutions and decision-makers who are working to systematically integrate gender perspectives into prevention and deradicalisation.
